Jerry Kerr Memorial Trophy Final 2006
Tannadice Park

Thursday 31 August

SAS 2-0 Banter Bus

(Sturrock 66, Lochhead pen 90)

Second half goals from Sye Sturrock and Scott Lochhead led the SAS to victory in the Jerry Kerr Memorial Trophy Final in a closely-contested match against the Banter Bus. In an even first half, the Banter Bus side enjoyed the bulk of possession and territorial advantage, with the constant running of front pairing Ryan Mulholland and Barry Cairncross continually working the SAS back four. After getting the game's first booking, Mark Butchart almost opened the scoring midway through the first half following a corner from the right, but 'Butch' saw his effort crash off the bar.

In contrast to the youthful energy of the Banter Bus side, the SAS team were happy to hit their opponents on the counter, with the experienced central midfielders Andy Hart and Ronnie Kenneth looking to pick out the passes to split the Banter Bus back four. It was one of these through balls which created their best chance of the opening 45 minutes, when Lochhead was sent through on goal, but the pacey striker's low shot across goal trundled off the post after beating Devine in the Banter Bus goal.

The game went into the second half goalless after Cairncross' volley from the edge of the area dipped narrowly over the bar. The SAS swapped both frontmen at half time, and the new pairing caused problems for the Banter Bus defence after the break. Kevin Clark earned the game's second booking, before his side conceded the opening goal midway into the second half. Sye Sturrock was sent clear with another good ball from midfield, and the striker showed tremendous composure as he lifted the ball beyond the reach of Devine and into the net in front of the East Stand.

The Banter Bus side threw men forward in search of an equaliser, but found no way through, and after Hart was booked for the SAS three minutes from time, the game ended in a little controversy. The SAS broke clear, with Lochhead running unchallenged into the Banter Bus half, evading the desperate lunge of Butchart who tried to bring the striker down from behind outside the area but made minimal contact.

Lochhead knocked the ball beyond the oncoming Devine, before going down as he went round the goalkeeper. All eyes turned to referee Joe Rice, who showed Butchart a second yellow card for the attempted professional foul before awarding the penalty after consultation with his assistant. Mulholland was red carded for foul and abusive language, before Lochhead picked himself up to slot home the penalty which sealed the win for the SAS side.
